GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- State authorities are looking into what they claim could be millions of dollars worth of grain missing from a Sherman grain warehouse. Josh Stevenson reports on the Texas Department of Agriculture's investigation.

Grain warehouses are in many ways the banks of the agriculture industry. Not only do they buy grains from farmers, but they also provide a place for farmers to store their grain until products are sold on the open market.

There are 348 grain warehouse facilities licensed by Texas Department of Agriculture across the state.

"We inspect warehouses once a year on a routine basis, if we hear complaints about a facility we will inspect it sooner than that," says Bryan Black at the Texas Department of Agriculture.

It was during one of these inspections on November 4th that one of the state’s 23 grain warehouse inspectors discovered what the agriculture department calls serious issues at the Dorchester Grains Company's warehouse in Sherman.

"Immediately, the Texas Department of Agriculture suspended the license of the company, and at this time no grain can be brought in or out of the facility until a full audit is completed," Black said.

Due to the ongoing investigation the TDA will not release the exact nature of the "issues" at the Dorchester Grain Company.

Black says the audit is proceeding as quickly as possible and that they are committed to protecting the assets of Texas Farmers and Ranchers.

"If we find out that it looks like someone broke the law, then this investigation can be turned over to the county prosecutor who could bring felony fraud charges."

The TDA is asking farmers that have grains stored with the Dorchester Grain Company to contact them at 214-631-0265.
