SHERMAN, TX - Retailers are not only cutting prices for the holiday sale season they're also hiring new employees to take on the busiest shopping season of the year. And with unemployment still plaguing the country, temporary jobs could be more than a seasonal position. Maddie Garrett explains how you could turn part-time into full-time

Grayson County College student Gordon Sies needed to find work this holiday season.

"I need a really flexible schedule because I'm in school so part time is what I wanted and that's what I got and it's working out pretty well,” said Sies.

JC Penney in Sherman hired Sies for a seasonal position. He's part of the 10% to 20% increase in staffers at the store.

"I've worked here about a month, and it's a pretty fun, relaxed easy going job, it's good to have for the holidays, good way to earn extra money,” said Sies.

With unemployment still at an all time high, that temporary job could be an opportunity to get in full time.

"I'm having less people who are just looking for a seasonal job. We are finding more people who are looking for full time employment right now. And we just might not have that opportunity for them right now, but there could be something for them in the future,” said Nic Hohne, store manager at JC Penney in Sherman, TX.

Thanks to the busy shopping season of November and December retailers need more workers in the stores to keep customers happy and spending money.

"We are ramping up our staffing even from where we were last year,” said Hohne.

Hohne explained if you want to get the job make sure your schedule is flexible for the extended holiday hours.

"One of the most important things I look at is what time do I need associates and if this applicant is available at those times, if they are and everything looks good on their application that's who we're going to call in for an interview,” said Hohne.

Managers also say following up after turning in your applications gives the potential employee an extra edge.

If the new employees prove themselves during the holiday rush Hohne said it could be just the opportunity they need to stick around long-term.

"What that seasonal job does for most associates it gives them the ability to see if this is a great place for them to work and if they like it and obviously if they work well and do a great job we're going to do everything we can to try to keep them after the holiday season as well,” said Hohne.

That's something to get new employees in the holiday spirit.
