TISHOMINGO -- The holiday season is also the season of giving, but one Tishomingo teen isn't asking for material gifts. She's asking people to donate blood at the Tishomingo High School's blood drive on Friday. Shelby Levins bring us this young girl's inspiring story as part of our special "Whats Right" series.

In less than a year, Stevy Cellum has received 24 units of blood. Now she's using her own pictures, color, and a little creativity to craft posters to inspire more people to donate blood.

"It's just a little poke it will only hurt for a second, I get poked two times a week,” Stevy explained.

The 14-year-old was diagnosed with bone cancer in February, but the disease is not dampening her spirits.

"There's some good things about it. It's made me stronger and it's got our family closer. But it's not fun, it's hard,” Stevy said.

Stevy is preparing for her fiftheen chemo treatment, but right now she's focused on Friday's blood drive at Tishomingo High School - creating more than 20 posters to tell people about the event.

The Freshman says she wouldn't be sitting here if it weren't for blood donors.

"I wouldn't be here. I would have probably already passed away,” Stevy said.

Stevy paints a very realistic picture, but she's not alone. The Oklahoma Blood Institute says cancer patients are one of the largest groups in need of blood.

“They may have to have one or two transfusions a month just to sustain their treatments. And sometimes cancer patients can through treatments for more than several years,” Susan Crews, the Director of the Southern Oklahoma Blood Institute, said.

OBI says the annual Tishomingo school blood drive is the largest one-day high school blood drive in the entire state. Stevy says she wants to do her part to maintain that title, and encourage other teens in need of blood.

"I don't want other people to have to go without - like not knowing that they can ask for blood, and I want them to be able to know that they can,” Stevy said.

The Tishomingo High School blood drive runs from 6:40 am to 6:00 pm Friday at the gym and Stevy is hoping to help bring out the largest amount of blood donors yet.
