Sherman, TX--The Grayson County Health Department began issuing the H1N1 vaccine Monday at 5 p.m. and continued to give out shots until 8 p.m. Most of the people we talked to were there not for themselves, but their children.
Dozens of people anxious to get their H1N1 vaccinations lined up outside the Grayson County Health Department in Sherman. An hour before the clinic even started B.B. Reedy and his son, Rustin, were first in line.
"We've been waiting for the H1N1 shots to come in. We have our youngest son and he's asthmatic and has had several surgeries and we're trying to give him the shot," said B.B. Reedy.
"I'm expecting that it doesn't hurt and I want to get it over with," said Rustin Reedy.
Rustin handled it pretty well but that wasn't the case for some of his younger counterparts it was a little more difficult, but the kids weren't the only ones upset. Some people were turned away because they did not fit into the target groups.
The groups include...
Women who are pregnant...
Those who live with or take care of infants under six months..
Healthcare and emergency service employees...
Children between the ages of six months and four years...
And kids between five and 18 who have high risk medical conditions...
"It's so important to stay within those specific target groups that we're asking for today and that's simply because they are more at risk to suffer from severe complications or even death from contracting the H1N1 virus,” said Amanda Ortez, Grayson County Health Department.
Ortez said those target groups will be the first to receive the vaccine, and if they run out it will be up to the state to decide if and when more will come.
"If we receive more and the target groups are expanded then we will do our best to notify the public. We will host clinic accordingly to the number of dosage received,” said Ortez.
