CBS NEWS -- Consumer safety officials are poised to recall more than 2 million cribs in the U-S and Canada, blamed for the deaths of at least four babies and dozens of injuries.
It's the largest single crib recall in U.S. history, but for Michelle Witte, it
comes too late. She lost her 10-month-old son Tyler when his head got stuck in the gap between the side rail and the headboard.
"To see the horrific sight of him strangled between the headboard and side rail of his crib was just horrifying to me," said Witte.
Those side rails that drop down are what concern the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Tuesday's recall involves 2.1 million cribs made by Stork Craft from January 1993 to October 2009.
147,000 of them have the Fisher Price logo.
Safety officials say malfunctioning plastic hardware is to blame for
serious injuries and four deaths. They urge parents to stop using the cribs immediately and to request a repair kit from the company's
website, www.storkcraft.com.
It's certainly more convenient to have a drop-down side, but with so many recalls, the crib industry is turning toward fixed-side cribs, as the CPSC works on tightening safety standards.
Almost all of the manufacturers that I know are switching any drop-side cribs to stationary-side cribs by the beginning of next year," said Lauren Logan, who owns the "Juvenile Shop" in Sherman Oak, California.
Lila Aviv is due to give birth December 5th. She likes the accessibility of
drop-down cribs but is now thinking twice.
"If it's not safe, I would probably stay away from it if I heard that there was some problem with it," said Aviv.
Shop owner Lauren Logan doesn't sell the Storkcraft brand but says she fielded dozens of calls Monday from worried parents who just want to make sure the crib is safe when baby goes to sleep.
