Higher Gas Prices Impacting Schools

5-17-04 - Gas prices are hitting home for local school districts, but the real impact could be felt during the next school year. From Ardmore to Sherman, districts are paying more per gallon now than ever before, and many are cutting back to stay under budgets.

In most cases, the cutbacks are cosmetic, which means funds used to wash and wax the buses have now been moved into the fuel budget in Ardmore. But paying for 160,000 miles worth of gas a year could trigger more cutbacks later on. Administrators promise they won’t cut back on bus routes, but they could reduce out of town trips and extra activities.

Transportation directors say they are waiting to see what gas prices do after Memorial Day before making decisions about how to budget fuel for the next school year.
