BONHAM, TX- Nobody wants to think about helpless animals being left out in the cold or abandoned but in Fannin County there is simply no more room.

County Commissioners have begun making plans to build a new facility to replace the only animal shelter in the county.

"It's way too small,” County Commissioner, Pat Hilliard said, “they've done the best that they can possibly do with it, I feel like for sure, under the conditions that they've had to work with. And we're trying to improve the conditions that the city of Bonham and animal control are having right now."

A small windowless facility in Bonham serves all of Fannin County.

"They've done a good job up until now and their hearts have really been in the right place,” Hilliard said, “But they can just no longer keep up."

Animals found in Honey Grove, Leonard, Savoy, Ector and Bonham all have to share the only cramped space that's available.

But county officials are hoping that the new building--to be built on fifteen acres outside of Bonham--will replace the old worn down shelter.
