Local Man Facing Deportation

5-24-04 - Immigration policies enacted in the months after the 9-11 attacks may now prevent a Madill man from staying with his adopted family in Texoma. For the last nine years, Royce and Linda King of Madill have shared their home with Jose Cortes, 27, a Columbian man who came here for an education and hopes of becoming a US citizen.

Jose graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Political Science. Since then, he took a position as director of public affairs for the Madill Police Department, while he worked toward earning a permanent visa.

But thanks to post 9-11 crackdowns, that task has proved almost impossible. His latest application for a visa was denied just last month. Cortes and his adopted family are attempting to appeal that ruling, but if its denied, he will have thirty days before being deported back to Columbia.
