SHERMAN, TX -- Packages and Christmas cards flood the U.S. Postal Service this time of year, but Monday might not be the best time to get your holiday mail out at the post office because it's the busiest day of the year for the USPS.

Approximately 830 million pieces of mail are expected to enter the system. That's about 245 million more than on a regular day. Postal workers say it's best to have your packages and forms ready ahead of time, and that the lunch hour is one of the peak times of day for business.

"It's been hectic the last few days. It's starting to pick up. The mail volume goes down of course, we pick up a lot of Christmas cards, catalogs, our packages go way up," Steven Fir at the Sherman Post Office says.

"It puts the carriers in a better mood. They're getting out there making people happy for the holidays."

Federal Express and United Parcel Service expect next Monday to be the busiest day for packages.
