Planned Parenthood Could Draw Protestors

5-27-04 - Planned Parenthood will open an office in Sherman next month, but they could be met with an organized protest outside. The pregnancy and family planning service will locate near Texoma Parkway and Peyton Street sometime in June.

Already, members of the Unity Fellowship Church say they will show up in mass to protest. They claim Planned Parenthood encourages abortion and sex among teenagers. They also claim the non-profit group recklessly hands out condoms to teenagers.

Today, First News contacted Planned Parenthood offices in Gainesville and Plano, but staff members refused to comment. A spokesperson in Dallas said she wouldn't respond to the church's concerns, but did say Planned Parenthood offers more beneficial services than most people think, like giving women reduced cost gynecological exams, breast and cervical cancer screening and testing for sexually transmitted diseases. She says the Sherman location will not perform abortions.
