ARDMORE, OK – While New Year's Eve usually means going out to parties, this year more people are deciding to ring in 2010 in a more low key setting. Dara Downs has more.
The people we talked to in Ardmore today say they're not interested in big parties this year, but rather are celebrating with family and friends at home.
Ardmoreites were stocking up with supplies this December 31st, but not for big New Year's Eve parties.
"A lot of friends are getting together at someone's house just want to celebrate there and just have fun at home and be safe."
While we'll leave 2009 in the same recession we came into in January, party-goers say the economy isn't to blame.
"The older we get, the more calm we get, the less activity we require, so a nice house party with friends is all we need at this point."
Phil Summers of Firstdownphils Liquor and Fine Wines says business has been good today. He says even though people are staying in, they're still going to have a good time.
"Of course you've got your group of people who are getting what they like and are going to stay home, stay off the streets."
New Year's Eve is commonly referred to as "Amateur Night," and Natalie Jones says that's a big reason she doesn't want to be out on the streets tonight.
"There's too many arrests and drunk drivers out there. I don't want to do that. I don't want to die."
And when they raise their glasses and toast when the ball drops at midnight, they say its not where you are that makes New Year's great–it's the people your with.
"Sitting at home, toasting it in, curled up on the couch with my husband and just spending time with him."
"With my wife, some children, and some friends."
"Wanna wish everyone a happy new year's."
If you're looking for a unique designated driver, the Cliffs at Cedervale say they will have a limo service on hand at the restaurant to make sure you get home safely.
