Iraqi Governing Council Dissolves; New President Selected

06-01-04 - (Baghdad, Iraq-AP) Iraq has a new president for the interim government. Today, Iraq's Governing Council voted to dissolve immediately rather than wait until the June 30th transfer of sovereignty.

A senior U-S official says the US led coalition remains in charge until the handover.
Among the issues the new Cabinet will begin negotiating is the status of US and other coalition forces in Iraq. A US official says the Bush administration is pleased with the selection of Iyad Allawi as prime minister and Ghazi Al Yawer as president. That, despite reports the US favored another politician for the largely ceremonial presidency. Al Yawer has been critical of the U-S but also denounced violence against coalition forces.

There have been deadly car bomb blasts in Baghdad and the north since the announcement.
