TISHOMINGO, OK - A home invasion in Tishomingo left a woman hospitalized Monday morning. Police say the woman was attacked and beaten with a blunt object, after a man forced himself inside her home. Now investigators are working to piece together the crime. Shelby Levins reports.
Police have not named a suspect yet, but say they are searching for the man responsible for the break-in and attack. Neighbors tell me they're now keeping an even closer eye on the neighborhood, and some say they're fearful an attacker may be on the loose.
Not many cars drive in an out of the southwest neighborhood in Tishomingo - typically it’s only those who live here.
"Everybody gets along. Everybody knows everybody. Everybody watches everybody's house,” George Reid explained.
But at about 9:00 Monday morning, police say someone broke into a house on West 22nd Street and attacked the woman inside.
The family asked us not to take video of their home.
Neighbors like George Reid say they're still stunned by the attack.
"It blows your mind to know that your friend's family over there just went through that. It could have been my house it could have been my wife or my kids,” Reid said.
Reid and his family have lived in their home for 17 years. He says he's never seen a crime like this.
Sgt.Ted Woodhead says in his four years with the Tishomingo Police Department, this is the first home invasion he's worked.
Woodhead said the attacker got into the house that's near Murray State College by knocking on the front door, and then pushing himself in, attacking a woman in her 30's who was inside.
"She said she fought back with her assailant until she fell unconscious and when she came to he was gone,” Sgt. Woodhead explained.
Police say the woman was beaten with some type of blunt object, and was taken to the hospital with head and back injuries.
Officers describe the attacker as a man wearing a brown hoodie and a black mask.
"We have some suspects and we're tracking down some leads right now,” Sgt. Woodhead said.
Woodhead says nothing was missing from the house, and they're not sure of a motive.
Reid says the neighborhood is pulling together, doing everything they can to help.
"We went around told everyone - make sure you lock your doors. We all live right here this is our home,” Reid said.
Police say the woman attacked in the break-in has been released from the hospital.
Officers say the man responsible for the crime could face a list of charges, including breaking and entering and possibly assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
