ARDMORE -- As the news sinks in that Oklahoma National Guard troops could once again be deployed overseas, one military husband is trying to make sure all soldiers can keep in touch with their loved ones through the "Cell Phones for Soldiers" program. Shelby Levins reports.

Robert Wells is an agricultural consultant at the Noble Foundation. He's also the proud husband of a Oklahoma National Guard solider. He showed us a picture taken on his wedding day - which was less than one week before his new wife was deployed overseas for a year.

"That is when I really figured out and understood just how important communication is and how much we take it for granted, that we can just pick up the phone and call our spouse at work or send an email or a text message,” Wells explained.

Wells says back in 2007, when his wife was serving in Iraq, he often found himself watching the clock waiting for the time when his wife might call.

"The ability just to hear that other person's voice - it's priceless,” Wells said.

Wells' wife is back on Texoma soil, but Wells is continuing to help our servicemen and women hear the voices of their loved ones with "Cell Phones for Soldiers"

"It's an opportunity for those folks who are doing the best they can by serving our country, who wouldn't otherwise have an opportunity to call home. This gives them the opportunity to be able to call home and talk to their families at home,” Wells explained.

"Cell Phones for Soldiers" takes old, broken or un-used cell phones and either refurbishes them for re-sale, or removes the precious metals and recycles them.

The Noble Foundation has been a drop off location for about two years, turning hundreds of cell phones into hundreds of hours of call time of our troops overseas.

"We've collected more than 500 cell phones, which means 500 hours of international talk time for soldiers that maybe couldn't communicate with their family otherwise,” Adam Calloway, the spokesman for the Noble Foundation explained.

"I plan on doing it as long as there's a need and as long as we have soldiers overseas,” Wells said.

Wells says he hope the donations pick up in the new year, especially considering Oklahoma National Guard troops could be deploying back overseas again.
