More than 3,000 Oklahoma service members are buried abroad. From France to the Philippines, Michael Beach set out to visit every single grave and leave behind a small piece of home. Beach left on his journey last June, and just recently returned to Texoma. Now he's doing more to honor the military men and who made the ultimate sacrifice, and he says he needs your help.
Micheal Beach took a picture of every Oklahoma serviceman's grave he visited, and left each fallen military man with a rose rock - he says it's like a little part of home.
"There's a little piece of Oklahoma with each one of these soldiers so that means even though it's a very small piece, it will be with them forever,” Beach said.
We first met Beach last May, as he was sifting through hundreds of the state's native rocks to take with him on his trip around the globe. Now that Beach's six month journey is over, he's realizing his project to honor Oklahoma service members is just beginning.
"I'm not the kind of person that just starts things like this. This is kind of very strange for me to do this, but I feel strong enough that it's worth doing," Beach said.
The Navy veteran is now searching through online databases, and asking friends and family of Oklahoma veterans to send him any information about their loved ones killed overseas in the line of duty.
Beach is looking for pictures, a little bit of family history - anything that will add a human touch to the stark white crosses.
And although each grave site may look strikingly similar to the next, every soldier had a unique story, and each one could have ended differently.
"instead of being there in the cemetery in France or Italy or in the Philippines, where would they have been today? What kind of lives would they have lived,” Beach said.
Beach knows those types of questions can never be answered, but he's confident there is more information to share about the Oklahomans buried on foreign soil, and he wants to share it with the world.
Beach says he won't give up on the men and women who gave everything.
"Who says there's a need to quit. As long as people are willing to share the information, then I think it can go on for as long as it needs to,” Beach said.
