6-4-04 - This weekend marks the 60th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, when allied forces began an invasion of France that would liberate the country and mark the turning point of World War II. One Bonham man survived the battle of Omaha Beach, and says he remembers D-Day like it was yesterday.

Frank Newingham was in his early 20’s when he landed on Omaha Beach. Married with a child at the time, the soldier was responsible for building communication lines at the front. Before the battle was over, a Nazi soldier would stab him. And Newingham still carries the physical and emotional scars of the war. He has suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome since the war and often thinks of the friends who never left those beaches.

Although people now consider him a hero, he thinks of himself as just a survivor.
