MURRAY COUNTY -- A Murray County man is dead, and his home burned to the ground. Authorities tell us they're investigating the death, while firefighters are working to determine what sparked the flames. Shelby Levins reports.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions. Murray county officials tell us with investigations pending, there's not a lot they can release. But as of Tuesday night we do know one man is dead, and a family is left without a home and a father.

Four hours after the flames sparked, fire continued to consume this home just north of Sulphur on Highway 177. Sulphur Fire Chief Danny Cox tell us the homeowner had lots of live ammunition inside that was being set off by the flames, making it too dangerous for his crew to aggressively fight the fire.

"You hate to set there and let one of them burn down, but you have to think about your crew first, so we made the decision to back up and let the structure burn,” Cox explained

Firefighters say when they arrived on scene Tuesday afternoon, a vehicle was also on fire, along with a second home on the property that was unoccupied. But Murray County Sheriff Darin Rogers tells us the initial 911 call was not for a house fire, but a disturbance call.

"We responded to a call this afternoon of some type of disturbance we arrived and there was smoke coming from two houses and one vehicle,” Sheriff Rogers said.

Sheriff Rogers tell us they found one man dead. Authorities aren't releasing the man's name, nor are they saying exactly where the man was found, or if he died before or after the fire started.

Sheriff Rogers isn't calling the death suspicious, and is simply saying the cause of death is undetermined. He says the body was taken by the state medical examiners office for an autopsy.

"We don't know the initial cause of death at this time. The state medical examiners office they will determine the cause of death,” Sheriff Rogers said.

Firefighters tell us the cause of the fire is also still under investigation. Chief Cox says it's too early to say if it was intentionally set or not, but says it is curious two houses we on fire at one time.

"Looked like a typical fire but you have two of them on fire at the same time so it'll will have to be investigated,” Chief Cox said.

Fire officials tell us they plan to stay at the residence into the early morning hours of Wednesday to make sure the flames are completely out. Authorities with the sheriff's department tell us they'll be back out to the property in the morning to continue their investigation.
