Sherman Sued Over Trash Petition

6-10-04 - A commercial trash company is suing the city of Sherman – another step in a dispute over the city’s plan to take over commercial trash service.

Representatives for IESI say the city was not justified when it rejected a petition with 2,300 signatures Monday night. The city claimed most of the signatures were invalid, including names of people who weren’t even city residents.

But today’s filing was enough to delay the city’s effort to move out commercial competition. A district judge filed a temporary restraining order until a hearing on June 22nd.

City leaders have claimed they’re taking over trash service to regulate prices, and to take advantage of the TASWA landfill that is opening next year.
