ARDMORE, OK - Emergency crews have be preparing for the latest round of winter weather all week, and now the wintry mix is here. And it's expected to get worse before it gets better.
The roads in Ardmore are very wet as the rain continues to come down, but it's the danger of ice on roads and bridges that emergency crews and troopers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol are most concerned about.
Ice is already beginning to form on tree branches in north Carter County. Sand and salt crews with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation are out trying to prevent or lessen the icy conditions on the roads.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol tells us they have additional troopers out tonight too, but the best advice remains if you don't have to get out in this wintry mix, stay in.
Temperatures are only expected to drop, which would make travel even more dangerous by icing over roads.
"A lot of times when roads start getting icy it can be very deceptive. It almost gives the appearance that the roads are wet, but in all actually they're icy, and that's when we see people getting hurt," Capt. Ronnie Hampton of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says.
OHP asks that you don't call into their station or dispatchers for road conditions. Instead, they say they are updating the latest conditions on their web page. We have a link to that, along with the Texas DPS Road Conditions web page below this story.
