Flyer Celebrates 5 Years

6-14-04 - Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer celebrated its 5th anniversary in Texoma Monday. Passenger rail service returned to Oklahoma on June 14th, 1999, after a 20 year absence. But its future in the area remains in doubt.

Since its debut in 1999, the Flyer has carried more than 300,000 passengers on its Oklahoma City to Ft Worth route, and in the past year, ridership is up by 17%.

But the Flyer has yet to make money, and for the 3rd year in a row, Oklahoma lawmakers failed to pass a bill that would fund the train.
