SHERMAN, TX - Knowing what to protect your home from could end up being a big money saver. And now a new insurance study let's you look at what the most common and costly insurance claims are right in your neighborhood.
When it comes to protecting your home, Home Depot Manager Todd Scott said it's always a good idea and a good investment.
"To avoid any additional repairs as far as replacing pipes or insurance claims it's good to try and be proactive and get their pipes insulated,” said Scott.
And thanks to a new study and online tool from Allstate insurance, knowing what to protect your home from just got a little easier.
"And really we did this study and we have this tool on our website because we want consumers to be aware of the factors that drive insurance costs,” said Kristen Beaman, Allstate public relations representative.
Allstate insurance conducted a seven year study using several different insurance agencies and then analyzed and compiled all that data. The result is a comprehensive study of the most common and costly insurance claims specific to your town.
"People, you know, have kind of “aha” moments when they see oh I didn't know theft is one of the most costly individual claims in Sherman, maybe I should check and make sure I've got the proper coverage," said Beaman.
For Sherman hail, wind and water damage top the list of most common claims. But the most costly are fire, theft and accidental leakage claims.
"It's definitely a win-win situation when you take preventative measures to protect your property, for both the consumers and the insurer, it just helps you know as far as cutting back on damage,” said Beaman.
So when homeowners can see exactly what's causing damage and costly claims in their area, then hopefully being proactive will come next.
"A simple investment, it could take $15 to $20 and you could insulate your pipes and protect them for the next three or four weeks, whatever the next cold spell might be, I think that's invaluable,” said Scott.
