VAN ALSTYNE, TX -- Not one, but two crashes involving drivers headed the wrong way on Highway 75 occurred Monday night in Van Alstyne, within just more than an hour of each other.
Van Alstyne Police say around 9:00 p.m. Monday, an SUV driven by a white female was traveling south in the northbound lane of Highway 75 at Farmington Road, crashed head-on into compact car headed northbound, also driven by a woman.
The SUV caught fire but the flames were immediately put out by emergency responders. Both drivers were taken by ambulance to area hospitals, the extent of their injuries is unknown.
Just about an hour earlier, around 7:45 p.m., Van Alstyne police say another driver headed south on northbound 75 caused a less severe crash, also in their city at northbound 75 and County Line Road.
Officers say a woman driving a Mazda pickup southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway hit a man driving in a Dodge pickup.
Van Alstyne Police say the man in the Dodge saw the Mazda and swerved, but the Mazda clipped his truck.
The man was not injured, but the woman was taken to Wilson N Jones with non-life threatening injuries.
Officers say alcohol was a factor in the crash. Both vehicles had to be towed and U.S. 75 northbound was shut down at County Line Road for about an hour.
