SHERMAN, TX - Just two days into the spring semester and Austin College students are already working together to raise money to help in Haiti. Maddie Garrett talked to students to find out how they're trying to make a difference.
"We're college students, we're poor, but at the same time you know that money's going towards a good cause, so I mean it's easy,” said Austin College senior Zach Bartush.
In just a few days the students have already collected roughly $1,300 through various fundraisers and donations. Their fundraisers are simple, and something the service station hopes the whole student body will take part in.
And with jars set up all over campus at hot spots and next to cash registers, it’s easy for students, faculty and staff to drop in spare change or a few extra dollars.
"Give it up for Haiti is one of the slogans that's been going around, sacrifice is a big word we've been talking about, ‘what can you sacrifice for people who don't have as much as you do?’" said Service Station student leader Ariel Katcherside.
Signs are up around the student center that read: "Give up a cup of coffee... Give someone food.” Students said it's the little things that they hope will make a big difference.
"Every little bit helps, every little bit helps… We've done different programs and stuff like that and we always manage to raise a significant amount of money for them," said Bartush.
Katcherside said they've got more programs planned and as the semester gets underway they hope the involvement will also continue to grow.
