SHERMAN, TX - A car accident this afternoon leaves Austin College in the dark Friday, even shutting down some campus buildings.

Sherman Police say a 70-year-old Sherman man, Jerry Franks, was driving his truck toward Austin College on Richards around 1 p.m. when for an unknown reason he lost control, hitting a utility pole, then a tree near Grand Avenue.

Franks was taken to a local hospital where he later died. Officers say they believe a medical condition led to the accident, but that remains under investigation.

The accident caused Austin College and surrounding homes to lose power.

"From what we understand, Austin College and several of the homes in this area on Richards and Cleveland are without power right now," Cpl. Brad Gibson of the Sherman Police Department says.

Austin College President Marjorie Hass says for safety reasons non-residential buildings are closed and afternoon classes have been canceled.

Haas says power should be restored later this evening.
