6-17-04 - Oklahoma will soon be the only US state where tattoos are illegal.

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford today signed a bill to make tattooing legal. The state must still approve health regulations to
govern the industry, which could take several months.

Oklahoma lawmakers voted down a proposal earlier this year that
would have legalized and regulated tattooing in the state. Senator Frank Shurden sponsored the bill and argued that it protect the health of Oklahomans who want tattoos.

Opponents of the bill argued that tattooing would not make
Oklahoma a better place to live.
