DURANT, OK -- Just two days from Sunday, one of the biggest casino/resorts in our area will open its doors. The new Choctaw Casino and Resort will provide not only a huge draw for tourists, but hopefully a major boost to the local economy. The grand opening isn't until Tuesday, but Maddie Garrett brings us a sneak peak inside.
Crossing the Red River takes you straight into casino country. And on Highway 75, that means Choctaw.
"The Choctaw Nation tribe has always been community oriented, with the ability to grow within the community, more jobs, more opportunities, more places to dine, more choices for entertainment and keep all of the dollars coming through the community," said Edye Tomasello, Director of Marketing.
In just two days, 22 months of construction and $300 Million dollars, all comes down the grand opening of their new resort and casino in Durant.
"This is something like you'll never see in Southeastern Oklahoma this is nice as Vegas, Shreveport, Bossier everywhere you want to go there's no casino nicer," said Jeramey Standridge, Dealer Manager.
Just by entering the lobby there's a feeling that this isn't just a place to gamble.
"it's a wonderful experience to watch a transformation of an individual when they walk through the doors, and they get excited, they're excited to come to work, they're excited to show this off," said Standridge.
When it comes to casinos it's all about raising the stakes, and here at the new Choctaw Casino and Resort they didn't just ante-up, they went all in.
With over 3,000 new gaming machines and roughly 40 black jack and poker tables. The designers of the casino combine state of the art gaming technology and security with a distinct feel of the Choctaw roots.
"Really wanted to bring the outdoors in, and that's reflected in a lot of the pieces. The heritage of choctaw is basically living in the building, in the structure."
Expanding the existing Choctaw Casino was no small investment for the tribal nation. And they aren't stopping there--with plans to remodel the old casino once the new resort opens.
"I'll be actually extremely satisfied when the doors open when the people come in, we put in a lot of work into the casino from the executive management and the managers and the department managers all the way down to the evs people who actually clean the casino," said Standridge.
Alcohol is one thing the tribe's chief didn't want on the floor, only in certain restaurants. But the Choctaws believe that some of the new features, such as an indoor-outdoor pool, new spa, luxury rooms and fine dining will make the resort a destination spot for visitors from near and far.
"This is an affordable, close by resort, there's nothing here that you wouldn't find whether it be in Las Vegas or in one of the big spas in Arizona or anywhere across the country," said Tomasello.
While most casinos are scaling back, Choctaw is going bigger. Doubling their number of employees and bringing in more dollars to the surrounding community as well.
"We hope to grow and hope to become that destination close by for all of our neighbors, Dallas, Fort Worth and Texoma," Tomasello.
The ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony will be Tuesday, February 9th at 6 p-m. The public is invited to attend and then enjoy the new casino.
