BONHAM, TX -- One day after a tragic bus accident in Bonham that killed an elderly man, friends and family say goodbye and remember his life and legacy a dedicated military man.

Maddie Garrett talked to a few of Andrew Dosser's friends Tuesday to find out more about his life.

"He's nice to be around, he's funny and he'd come in and sit around and talk to you like I said he'd play some dominoes," said Dosser's longtime friend, Frank Manry.

For over 40 years, Andrew Madison Dosser, also known around town as "Sonny", would come by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Bonham to spend time with other vets.

"He was experienced, if you're young, you're going to ask the older guy hey what did you do, how did you do it, what do you think about nowadays, and it's just a good feeling that you can feel with one another you know," said Manry.

But today his brothers from the VFW said goodbye to their old friend, with an honor guard ceremony at his funeral in Bonham to pay their respects.

"That you honor him as your camrade just like you knew him all your life and you really do in it's own way cause you go by the same rules, United States of America, play by the same rules start to finish," Manry said.

Early Monday morning a Bonham ISD school bus accidentally struck Dosser while he was walking along North FM 273 near the Lake Bonham area. He died later that day at the Red River Regional Hospital.

"It was terrible what happened to him, but the man didn't deserve to go that way after all his life like he did," said Sonny Bingham, another longtime friend of Dosser's.

Bingham joined the local VFW at the same time Dosser did in the early 1970's and they became good friends.

"He'd give you the shirt off his back literally, and help you out, anybody out," Bingham said.

Sonny says he and others at the VFW respected and admired Dosser for his long military career. He served in the Air Force as a boom operator in World War II, the Korean War--where he was a Prisoner of War, and also in Vietnam.

"Just got to admire him you know for his courage I guess what'd you say, just he didn't brag about it or anything like that, it was just the facts," Bingham said.

Dosser's friends at the VFW, like his family say he'll be dearly missed.

"This was hard today because I knew the fella, knew him real well and it's hard to lose anybody who served."

Andrew Dosser was 82 years old, born in Athens Texas in 1928, and will be laid to rest in Waco where his family lives.
