SHERMAN, TX--Grayson County Sheriff Keith Gary is asking for citizens to help law officials build a stronger relationship with their communities to help fight crime in their neighborhoods. Sheriff Gary wants residents in Grayson County to become associate members of the Sheriff's Association of Texas. The idea is that member's dues, which are $25 annually, will help to provide training and technical resources to sheriff's departments across the State of Texas. Sheriff Gary says contributions are tax deductable. The Sheriff's Association of Texas was established in 1874.
Sheriff Gary says the idea behind the program is to prevent crime, fight drug abuse, and promote public safety as well as provide a sense of belonging for members. The program also provides scholarships for deputies.
"A very important program. It's providing scholarships. Law enforcement officers aren't necessarily over paid in many places. So it's a great benefit to have that scholarship money available,” says Gary.
Residents in all Texas counties should receive a sign up form in the mail within the next few weeks. Fannin County Sheriff Kenneth Moore is also urging residents there to sign up. Sheriff Gary says residents will not receive solicitation about the Sheriff's Association of Texas by phone. If you do, Sheriff Gray says contact your local sheriff's department immediately.
