MILBURN, OK - A U.S. Marshal's Task force and Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers are searching for a man in Johnston County. The chase started around midnight. Dara Downs has been following the manhunt all day.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says 28-year-old Brandon Burkhalter failed to stop when an OHP trooper tried to serve an outstanding warrant out of Murray County late last night. O-H-P says they did stop Burkhalter's vehicle with road spikes, but he then fled on foot.
Rick Lyle of Milburn, Oklahoma, says when he heard the lights and sirens this morning, he quickly grabbed his camera and shot this video, taken shortly after Burkhalter fled the scene on foot.
"They had automatic weapons out that it looked like and I said well it might be a pretty serious person that they were looking for, and they were scattered all over and they had every country road covered," Lyle told us.
Lt. Danny Morris of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the outstanding warrant is now the least of Burkhalter's worries. He will also face charges for eluding law enforcement, a felony crime.
"He's going to have additional charges. He'll have an eluding charge and also for running a road block. He did run a road block last night so he'll be facing those two charges at the very minimum plus he's other drug charges he already had."
The Milburn Fire Department became OHP's command post, and troopers say right now they have special investigative officers in the area following up on any leads.
Burkhalter has not been sighted since he ran last night, but troopers say he could be hiding in a dense wooded area west of Milburn, somewhere resident Rick Lyle says would be very easy to hide.
"It's pretty thick and pretty brushy. It would be comparable to the jungle in the Amazon. I mean it's hard to even get through it much less find somebody in it."
OHP did bring in a helicopter as well as a plane to help with the search. Lt. Morris says they will have officers in the area tonight, but they are encouraging local residents to be on the lookout for anyone suspicious.
"They should stay in their residences, keep their doors locked, and not open them just for anyone, and also if they have vehicles sitting outside make sure they don't leave the keys in them."
OHP says Burkhalter could have been picked up by someone in the area, and asks that anyone with information about his whereabouts to call 911.
