IVANHOE, TX - The Fannin County community of Ivanhoe is now without a fire department.

Former Ivanhoe Volunteer Fire Chief Jeff Peeler says the decision to shut down was made earlier in the month due to lack of funding and equipment.

Peeler says he actually he retired two weeks ago, in part over those problems faced by the department.

Steve Hastings, President of the Fannin County Fire Chiefs' Association, says Fannin County Commissioners officially recognized the shutdown at their meeting Monday morning and tabled the issue of reopening the department for now.

That decision, Hastings says, will be made after a community meeting on March 13 at 10 am at the Sam Rayburn school.

In the meantime, Ivanhoe residents will receive fire protection from Ravenna, Bonham and Telephone firefighters.
