DENISON, TX--Environmental specialists say zebra mussels are a growing problem at Lake Texoma, and now officials are putting out warnings for boaters and lake goers .

The signs warn boaters about the zebra mussels and explain how to clean the muscles off a boat. This is because they are so small, they can actually get inside water pipes in a boat and even in pipes cities use for drinking water. The muscles can clog up the pipes. Environmental Specialist, Michael Wingfield says the lake's main priority right now is preventing the mussels from spreading to other lakes.

"It tells you on your sign that you need to wash your boat and stuff when you come out. Look for any zebra mussels that might be on it. If it does, leave it out of the water for 10 to 15 days so that it will help kill them. So that you don't spread them to other lakes,” said Wingfield.

Wingfield says so far, lake officials are unaware of the mussels spreading to surrounding lakes.
