BONHAM TX--Despite recent spikes in the cost of groceries Americans pay far less for food than the rest of the world; what is more amazing is that less than two percent of Americans grow all the food that feeds the entire country and many others around the globe.

They were busy serving it up at Hickory Bar-B-Que in Bonham today, and while the food is great, the price is even better.

"A friend told me that it was only a dollar and five cents and I had to come and see, and I got some more food to carry home to my husband," said Melinda Miller.

But the low cost lunch is more than just a great deal it is also meant to prove a point.

"The Farmers share is only 19 cents," said Jerry Magness, the president of the Fannin County Farm Bureau.

He says today's event is part of Food Check out week which shows people how to stretch their grocery dollars, but also highlights the value of the food American farmers grow.

"It takes just five weeks for Americans to earn enough money to buy groceries for a year," said Magness.

That compared to the 8 weeks it takes most Americans to earn enough to pay for housing, and ten weeks to pay for federal taxes.

"We are just trying to get our message out that we are a low cost producer," said Magness.
