SHERMAN, TX— The League of Women Voters of Sherman/ Grayson County said with so many contested elections this year they thought it would be beneficial to hold a forum.
Residents were invited to ask the candidates questions at the Grayson County Courthouse, Thursday night.
It's an election year for several county positions, including District Clerk.
Each of the republican candidates for clerk spoke at the forum, explaining their ties to the community.
Kathy Aaron said, "I grew up in the small town of Dorchester, attended Howe public schools and Grayson County college."
Michelle Guedea said, "I'm currently attending Southeastern Oklahoma State University and I will graduate in May with my bachelors degree in criminal justice."
"I've spent seven years of legal experience in both the criminal and civil courts as a legal assistant," Kelly Clark Ashmore, said.
Hearing from all the candidates was one of the reasons Christina Johnstone of Gunter, came to the forum.
"I believe it's important because first of all I believe in community service, and secondly I also believe there are some issues and some problems that need to be addressed," Christina Johnstone, said.
Also in attendance, the two Democratic candidates for Grayson County Judge, Glen Melancon and Greg Middents.
The winner faces current Grayson County Judge, Drue Bynum in November.
Greg Middents, said, "Public servants are supposed to work for the public, you the people."
Glen Melancon, said, "We need to make sure, that the next county judge starts off by listening."
Only one of the four candidates running for county commissioner attended.
Martin McLain, running for Precinct 2 spoke to the audience for two minutes, but took no questions according to the forum's policy, since he was the only candidate represented.
Local League of Women Voters President, Jacqueline Moore, said she was thrilled with the turnout.
“It's a great opportunity to find out what people believe, and to meet your candidates and really get a sense of what's going on. I think it's democracy at its best."
