AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas voters took to the polls today to weigh in on the primary race between Republican Gov. Rick Perry and rival U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
Both candidates had early morning appearances in Dallas.
Fellow Republican Debra Medina is a favorite of many tea party voters and could pull in enough support to force a runoff. If no one wins a majority of Tuesday's vote, the top two finishers will face off April 13.
The Republican winner will go up against the Democratic nominee in November. Ex-Houston Mayor Bill White is favored among the Democrats over Houston hair-care magnate Farouk Shami and five others.
In Frisco today a tea party volunteer handed out pamphlets as voters streamed in just after the polls opened.
A number of other state and congressional offices are on today's ballot.

Additional Propositions on Republican Ballot
GRAYSON COUNTY, TX - In addition to all those races, voters across Texas have the opportunity to sound off on six propositions on Tuesday’s Republican Primary Ballot.
“The purpose of these propositions is to obtain a mandate from voters on the issues that are front and center in the public debate,” said Clyde Siebman.
The State Republican Executive Committee authorized the inclusion of these six questions on the ballot so voters have an official way to send a message to Washington and Austin regarding their opinion on these issues, he said. Siebman is a member of the State Republican Executive Committee representing Senate District 30.
“Although the results are nonbinding, if enough voters weigh in on the questions and the results show wide spread support, or lack of support, it is an effective tool for voters to use when communicating with their elected officials,” he said.
The measures include questions regarding voter identification, border security, taxpayer protection, and freedom to use the name of God on the public square among others.
”These questions placed on the official ballot are the ultimate opinion poll,” Siebman said. “Once the results are in, it is impossible for elected officials to claim ignorance as to the will of people,” he said.
“The more people who vote on these measures, the more powerful the result and the more impact they will have in Washington and Austin. It is hard to ignore public opinion when it is expressed loudly by the very people who are casting votes in the election,” Siebman said.
Voters are encouraged to participate in the Republican Primary and voice their opinion on these important questions.
The Republican Primary Election will be held this Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. throughout Grayson County. Voters can find the location of their poll by logging on to the County Clerk’s website. Siebman said that any voters, who are unable to identify their polling location, are welcome to call his office at (903) 870-0070.
