SHERMAN, TX - It seems as time runs out before election day, there are more campaign stops, and more political ads on the airwaves. But does the aggressive campaigning work? We talked to experts, Texomans and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison herself to find out.
Personal hits, political blows, this year's Republican gubernatorial race has turned out to be one of the most aggressive yet, especially when it comes to political ads.
"I think we should turn around and get to business rather than bashing the opponent,” said Tony Alexander, a Rowlett resident who works in Sherman.
Negative campaigning has been around since the beginning of politics. Grayson County College Government professor Mary Linder said there's a reason for that.
"You're going to see more negative than positive unfortunately, even though people say they are tired of the negative ads, the negative ads are the ones they remember,” said Linder.
So despite the backlash most "attack ads" recieve, they're still out there being heard by voters, at least most of them.
"You can only hear the same thing over and over so many times without kind of getting wore out on it, regardless of who you're supporting, and it’s just you know the same thing, it's like tell us the plan,” said Alexander.
"Most things you see in the advertisements aren't true or are very biased so I don't even pay attention to those,” countered Sherman resident David Rylander.
So what does influence voters? The people we asked said they appreciate personal visits like the one today by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison at City Limits restaurant.
"It's a lot more refreshing to hear them here and actually see them and you can kind of tell in person, you know, you can get a feel for them and whether you like them or not,” explained Craig Prengler of Dallas who also works in Sherman.
We were sure to ask Hutchison about the negative campaigning during her visit to Sherman:
"I'm so pleased that we are able to have campaign ads that are hitting back at the misinformation that Governor Perry is putting out,” said Hutchison during an interview.
But Linder says the same could be said on Perry's end as well.
"The ads of course are one sided, they're telling you one side of the issue and the best thing is to take the ad as an invitation to look deeper into the issue,” said Linder.
We did try to contact Governor Perry’s campaign office to ask him about the aggressive campaign ads as well, but did not get a response.
Polls open on Tuesday, March 2, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and we’ll have all results from both state-wide races and local elections.
