MADILL, OK--Two people are dead after two separate accidents both with ties to Madill Public Schools. Jon Dotson, Madill Superintendent, tells KXII everyone at Madill Public Schools are in shock and are saddened by the death of a student and a custodian after two unrelated accidents on Monday in Carter County.

The first accident killed Madill Public Schools’ custodian, 48-year-old Kimberly Awalt. She died after a crashing into another car on Highway 177, about 2.5 miles north of Dickson. Troopers said she was southbound just before 5:00 p.m. on Monday when she ran off the road, over-corrected and collided with the oncoming car. Awalt died on the way to the hospital. Neither her passenger or the driver of the other car were injured. School administrators say Awalt was headed to Madill for work.

The other accident happened around 9:40 p.m. Monday night on Highway 70 about 2 miles east of Ardmore. OHP tells KXII a16-year old student from Madill was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer eastbound on Highway 70. OHP said the driver approached another vehicle from behind at a "rapid pace.” In an attempt to avoid striking that vehicle from behind, the driver swerved, lossing control and actually striking the driver's side of the other vehicle. The explorer rolled 1.5 times.

Two passengers were ejected; One of them, 18-year old Jose Pedro Rangel (pictured above), a soccer player for Madill. Rangel was flown to Parkland in Dallas, but was pronounced dead on by an Emergency Room doctor. The other passenger, a minor, was treated and released at a local hospital. School administrators say all five of the occupants in the Explorer were teammates on the Madill Soccer team. We're told the teens were coming home from buying ties to dress up before their first soccer game of the season that was scheduled for Tuesday night. School administrators have now postponed the game untill Thursday.

Students and parents say the saddness over Rangel's death could be felt throught Madill High School on Tuesday.

"It was terrible. We were all crying. We couldn't get any work done or anything because we just miss him," Rylee Hendrix, a friend of Rangel's said.

"He was a great kid, spent some time at our house. He'll be missed by all. I feel very sorry for his family right now. My heart goes out to them," Roxann Ford, a Madill parent said.

Those who knew Rangel say he'll not only be remembered for his love for soccer, but for his love for others.

"He'd go to the movies with her, hang out there when she needed a shoulder to cry on - just an amazing boy," Ford said.

And friends say they'll never forget Rangel and his fun-loving spirit.

"He made us laugh a lot. He was just a really good friend," Hendrix said.
