WAPANUCKA, OK--An update on a small town in Johnston County being overrun by garbage.

We told you several weeks ago that dumpsters in Wapanucka were not being emptied. Not only is it a messy situation for residents, it's the source of some trash talk between city officials.

Miller Mart used to be a convenient stop for a quick snack or a soda, but now residents also use it as a place to dump their garbage.

Chase Brooks is an employee at Miller Mart and said, "I work from 5-9:30 and I'll see maybe 4 or 5 people come up here and dump their trash from their dolly carts, or their polly carts."

Residents of Wapanucka haven't had their personal dumpsters emptied for over a month so people are leaving their trash in large commercial dumpsters around town.

The company contracted with the township, Waste Connections, says they would have no problem emptying residential dumpsters, if Wapanucka would just pay the bill.

Carry Dixon is the district manager with Waste Connections. He said, "We've tried several times to put the town of Wapanucka on a payment plan, and they have basically not answered and refused to meet our requests."

City council member, Doris Gooch, says city water clerk Julie Wallace, is responsible for writing the checks to pay Waste Connections, and Gooch says she doesn't know why the bill is not being paid.

We tried to contact Wallace several times this afternoon, but she could not be reached for comment.

Gooch says she's tired of paying the $13 garbage bill and having to empty her own dumpster, and several other residents voice the same concerns.

But she needs the help of other council members to get those bills paid so collections can begin again.

"I know they let them get two months behind, three months behind, but you're letting it go, and we can't operate, and they just got mad. The board members just seemed to get furious, because I pulled this up and checked into it."

Gooch says the last time residential dumpsters were emptied was sometime in January.

And the township has now hired a lawyer to handle the negotiations with Waste Connections.
