07-02-04 - (Los Angeles-AP) -- He was the brutish Stanley Kowalski of "A Streetcar Named Desire" and the mixed up Terry Malloy of "On the
Waterfront" who "could've been a contender." Later, he was the
wily Don Vito Corleone of "The Godfather."
Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Marlon Brando has died at
the age of 80. His attorney says he died in a Los Angeles hospital yesterday but declined to release the cause of death, citing Brando's
penchant for privacy.
Brando is considered the greatest actor of his generation. Brando won his first Oscar for "On the Waterfront," which he
accepted, but he turned down one for "The Godfather" to protest
Hollywood's treatment of Native Americans.
He also made headlines in his personal life. His son was
convicted of killing his half-sister's boyfriend, and his daughter
later committed suicide.
