07-05-04 – Crowds at Oklahoma lakes were not deterred by the new park fees over the 4th of July weekend. This is the first big holiday weekend in which lake goers at Lake Texoma and Lake Murray were forced to pay a usage fee at state parks.
The fee went into effect at Lake Murray on May 1st and some were concerned that it might affect attendance at the lake. However, park officials say the $3 a day fee did not deter lake goers, saying this year’s Fourth of July turnout is the largest in recent years.
Lake managers say there were a few complaints; however most were fine with paying the fee.
The bill to raise state park fees was approved by the Oklahoma Legislature last year. The money will be used for park improvements and maintenance.
