ARDMORE, OK - After a year-long deployment to Iraq, the Ardmore community welcomed home the 910 Quartermasters on Sunday. And family and friends said they aren't just their soldiers, but hometown heroes as well.
Rain and wet weather didn't keep community and family members from lining the streets in front of the Reserve center today as they anxiously awaited the troop’s arrival. Many held American flags and homemade posters to welcome home their loved ones.
"It's great. All the people here it's fantastic. They were lining the highway all the way here and in the streets. It was a great feeling,” said CWIII Jimmy Talbot or the U.S. Army Reserves.
Members of several motorcylce clubs held flags as the 910 Quartermasters marched in formation one last time to be formally welcomed home and released to be with their families.
"I'm excited. I'm overwhelmed. It still hasn't fully hit me that I'm actually home. That this is it. I'm not going somewhere else in Iraq. I'm not moving to different rooms or anything. This is it. I'm home,” said Sergeant Jessica Cournia.
The 910 deployed on March 8, 2009, with 75 men and women and today after spending a year over seas they returned home with all 75.
Chief Warrant Officer Jimmy Talbot says he's proud of the work his troops were able to do while in Iraq.
"It’s outstanding to have them all back. They all did a fantastic job there was so many goals reached here this past year individually and as a unit that it was great. They worked hard. They deserve everything they get,” said Talbot.
And as the soldiers were celebrated and thanked for their service, Sergeant James Curtain says the real thanks go to his family.
"I know it's hard on us to do what we do but like my wife she has three kids to watch over and I know it’s got to be hard. If it wasn't for our families this wouldn't be possible,” said Curtain.
