Fire Clears Way for Historic Demolition

7-6-04 - A fire inside a vacant Sherman house has cleared the way for the city to tear it down. The historic home on the corner of Walnut and Spring has been the center of controversy for months, amid neighbor complaints and a battle between Sherman and state officials.

But around 10am Tuesday, the fire marshal suspects someone started a fire in the attic of the home. The fire was contained within 12 minutes, limiting damage to the attic. They suspect children – which is a key reason neighbors have lobbied to have the home demolished because it poses a danger to nosey children.

After the fire, the Texas Historical Commission granted the city’s request to demolish the home, some three months after they condemned it.

Demolition will begin early next week. First News spoke to the home’s owner today who says he understands but wishes it could be saved.
