ACHILLE, OK- Shortly after the mayor of Achille was arrested at city hall today, a crowd of nearly a hundred people gathered outside.
While the charges against Lynn Chambers are not related to city business, many of those same people today were at a city council meeting Monday asking for his resignation.
Resident Dana Reese said, "It's really gone down hill a lot in the last five years."
Achille, Oklahoma may be small, but some residents say they have big problems when it comes to city government.
Lynn Chambers was arrested Wednesday afternoon on felony embezzlement charges and some locals say it was a long time coming.
"He's not doing what he said he was going to do, help the people out," Achille police officer Isaac Sexton, said.
Fifty-eight-year Achille resident, Susie Baker says the mayor is,"Slick. He's like a rotten apple. When he gets close to another apple it turns rotten, too."
Authorities with the Choctaw Nation arrested Chambers on accusations that he misused nearly $3,000 designated for a construction project.
Chambers' full-time job is as a general contractor.
Court records state the construction project was for clients who'd received a grant from the Choctaw Housing Authority.
Chambers was released from the Bryan County jail Wednesday night on a $2,500 bond.
While the charges have nothing to do with Chamber's duties as Achille's mayor, community members gathered at city hall not long after his arrest, demanding he resign.
"We're trying,” Susie Baker said, “We need the attorney general to help us."
A sign on the door of city hall claimed the staff was out sick for the day.
City officials who answered the phone Wednesday afternoon refused to comment about the arrest.
Residents say they tried to speak at a council meeting Monday but their opportunity was removed from the agenda.
Even Chambers fellow council members say they'd like to see him step down, but without voter turnout, changes can't be made.
Council member, Richard Taylor, said "There's not enough voters, that care, to get out and actually vote."
"Lynn had been mayor before, had more experience, then Lynn was put up. From there the rest of the board has kind of, the old board has kind of went off, and Lynn has put his best friends in. Friends that are not going to say no to him," Dana Reese, said.
Court documents filed this week claim Chambers was using checks written for construction materials and trading them in for gift cards at a Durant home improvement store. No word on an official arraignment. We tried to contact Chambers earlier tonight but were unsuccessful.
