TISHOMINGO, OK - The murder of a Murray State College instructor a week and a half ago, is still taking a toll on the community. But former students we talked to want Jane Bullard to be remembered not for her tragic death, but rather how she lived her life. Shelby Levins reports.
Crime scene tape still surrounds what's left of Jane Bullard's home. Now a make-shift memorial stands in remembrance of the woman and educator who touched so many lives.
"I think it's important not so much to concentrate on how she died, because that was tragic, but it's more important to focus on how she lived,” former student Marcia Craig said.
Craig says Bullard was more than an instructor to her, she was an inspiration. Craig says she earned her psychology degree because of Bullard.
"She meant so much to me because she was the first one when I came back to school besides my family that told me – ‘you can do it, it is possible,’” Craig said.
One of the hardest things about Bullard's murder for Craig, is knowing Bullard won't be able to help other students achieve success.
Administrators at the Ardmore Higher Education Center say Bullard touched the lives of thousands of students. And Craig says Bullard never met a person she wouldn't help.
"She would do anything for anybody. Even if it was her last shirt, she'd give it to you proudly,” Craig said.
These three -- Roy Zornes, Jr., James Baker, and Angel Cassa -- are now in jail, accused of burglarizing, raping and murdering Bullard, then setting her house on fire.
Authorities say the three came to Bullard’s house asking for gas money, but then turned violent on the woman.
Authorities add Zornes was once a foster child of Bullard.
"It makes me sad, almost makes me sick to think that some one that she took in willingly could do that to her,” Craig said.
Authorities tell us this is not the first time any of the three have been arrested.
Baker has been previously convicted of drug possession. Cassa has been arrested for public intoxication. And Zornes has been arrested for burglary and forging checks.
The District Attorney's office says it hopes to officially file charges of murder and other charges against the three suspects Tuesday morning.
