Deputy Shoots at Fleeing Suspect, Ends Chase

7-12-04 - Carter County authorities and Ardmore and Dickson police had their hands full Monday night – chasing an armed robber and then opening fire on his pickup. It began around 7pm when police say Roy Carl Bales, 49, robbed the Ard-Mart convenience store on 12th and Washington streets. Armed with a .22 caliber handgun, he stole cash and then fled in a stolen pickup truck from Tulsa.

Authorities caught up with him on highway 199 heading towards Dickson, where they set up a roadblock. But Bales spun around, and rammed an Ardmore patrol car.

Fearing he’d do harm to them or citizens, a Carter County deputy drove up alongside the speeding Bales, and fired four shots at his pickup. That was enough to convince Bales to pull over and surrender.

Bales was already wanted on three warrants for armed robbery out of Florida. He now faces charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, attempting to elude an officer, possession of stolen property, and 1st degree robbery.
