Tax Free Weekend Kicks Off in Texas

8-5-04 - The state's annual sales tax holiday -- as most schools prepare to resume classes -- begins Friday and runs through Sunday.

Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn has predicted Texas families
will save more than 46 million dollars in state and local sales taxes this weekend. Strayhorn says people in Texas have saved more than 193
million dollars over the past five years due to the back-to-school
tax-free holidays.

Dozens of southern Oklahoma businesses will try to keep shoppers from heading across the border by holding "tax discount" sales. Unlike Texas, they'll apply the discount to all types of merchandise.

Some Oklahoma lawmakers have pushed for a similar tax-free weekend, but say its too much of a burden on the state. In the meantime, local merchants will do what they can to keep customers at home.
