DENISON, TX - Denison Police say 44-year-old Robert Kane was found beaten to death outside the Towne Pub early Sunday morning. Now one man, 28-year-old James Aaron Castillo (pictured, right), has been charged with his murder.
Kane, a Denison High School graduate, was a beloved father and grandfather, but early Sunday morning he became the victim of a brutal assault that ended his life.
Now one man is in custody for murder and community members say they're in shock.
Lt. Mike Eppler with the Denison Police Department said, "Around 1:30 this morning we got a call from a local night club on South Armstrong, The Towne Pub, that there was a man down."
"Through our investigation we found that we had two men, for some reason still unknown exactly, got into some kind of confrontation out in the parking lot," Eppler said.
Officers say they aren't called to the Towne Pub anymore often than the other bars in town. Passers-by say Saturday night the bar looked particularly busy.
"It was very crowded. I pointed out to my wife, I said, wow, they got a brisky business tonight," local business owner Carlos Chapa said.
Chapa owns a business just one mile down the road from where Sunday's murder occurred. He opened the restaurant, Que Pasa, last week because he felt Denison would be a great place to settle down.
"It is a peaceful community, it's an uneventful town. You know this is where I want to probably spend the rest of my years," Chapa said.
Denison police say it doesn't look like robbery was a motive in the beating death and say they're not sure what sparked the fight.
Chapa said he can't understand how something so disturbing could happen just down the street.
"I was kind of in shock. I mean it is shocking every time something like that happens close to your business," Chapa said.
While officers say the investigation into Kane's beating death continues, friends and family say his life will not soon be forgotten.
A Facebook page has already been set up as a memorial for Robert Kane.
According to Kane's ex-mother-in-law, authorities recommended that a close family member not come out to identify Kane's body because he was beaten so badly, he was nearly unrecognizable.
Police said Monday 28-year-old Robert Aaron Castillo of Sherman is charged with Kane's murder. He is currently being held in the Grayson County Jail. Bond was set at $500,759.
Eppler says although an arrest has been made, Denison Police say their investigation is far from over.
"Anyone with information,we'd certainly love for you to come forward, and we need to talk to you. We're still following up on information and gathering information."
A vigil for Robert Kane will be held at Fisher's Funeral Home in Denison on Wednesday evening. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Denison.
