Safety in Question Along Stretch of 70

8-9-04 - Traffic problems outside Durant’s newest industry have attracted the attention of the state. At issue is the center turn lane on highway 70, just outside Cardinal Glass. Vehicles exiting the plant often use the turn-only lane to enter the highway, so they won’t be an obstacle for oncoming traffic. But that’s nearly caused accidents those who use the lane to turn.

On Monday, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol was camped outside the entrance studying traffic patterns. Three accidents in three months have prompted troopers to work with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to come up with solutions. Those include a warning sign and flashing caution lights.

Cardinal Glass officials say they are aware of this problem and are in the process of putting up a sign warning drivers the center lane is a shared lane.

Troopers will turn over their findings to O-Dot at the end of the week. An access road could possibly be built giving employees another road to use.
