Five-Year-Old Killed; Mistaken for Burglar

8-16-04 - HOUSTON (AP) A 5-year-old girl in Houston is dead after being mistaken for a burglar by her stepfather. Police say Alejandra Hernandez was shot in the chest with a single bullet by her stepfather, Agun Ortega Pina.

He tells police he heard suspicious noises and reached for his gun about early Sunday morning.

He shot when someone tried to open the door of the bedroom where he and his wife were sleeping.

The girl died at a Houston hospital.
