LONE GROVE, OK - Two separate tornadoes touched down in Carter County yesterday evening. One of the worst hit areas is on Hometown Road about 5 miles north of Lone Grove. Emergency officials surveying that area today confirm there are no reports of any injuries, but say at least 10 homes are destroyed or damaged.
Demolished homes, downed trees, and raw emotions all left behind by the tornado that ripped through central Carter County.
"To look at it now, it's gone. I don't have anything. I don't have anything left but my life," says Alvis Christian, who was carried into a storm shelter by her family.
"I knew it was coming. I knew we had a tornado."
As the tornado destroyed her home, Christian and her family huddled inside the storm cellar.
"I was crying out, I was screaming God help us, God help us now. It didn't dawn on me to lose the house."
Christian is one of two homeowners on Hometown Road just a few miles north of Lone Grove whose home was destroyed. Now family and friends are beginning the long cleanup process, trying to salvage what's left behin by a disaster that lasted just a matter of minutes.
"I've never actually seen anything develop so quickly or move so fast as it did last night," Paul Tucker with Carter County Emergency Management says.
But just as fast as the storms came and went, the emergency response efforts began to flow in. Work crews are clearing the roads, as Christan's family works to put her life back together.
"You see all my loved ones, you see what I've got. But that is earthly. I have what means the most."
At 85 years old this is the second twister that has devastated Christan's home. She rebuilt back in the 1970s and plans to do the same now.
"Yes. my heart's heavy. You can't buy back lives, but you can build back homes."
Governor Brad Henry has declared a state of emergency in 56 counties in Oklahoma, including Carter County. Governor Henry's disaster declaration today is the first step in seeking federal assistance.
