SHERMAN, TX - Questions still remain after a bus accident Monday in Sherman, where police say the bus driver ran a red light, sending several children to the hospital. Daniel Armbruster has the latest.
A source close to the situation tells KXII that the bus driver in yesterday's incident is not driving on the current route, at least temporarily. But school administrators, which include Transportation Director Randy Reddell and Superintendent Dr. Al Hambrick, are staying tight-lipped about the matter, only saying that it remains a personnel situation within the district.
According to police the bus was carrying a total of 46 people. Nine children were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. All injuries were described by emergency workers as minor. The children on board were 5th and 6th graders from Dillingham Intermediate School.
Police say witnesses at the scene told them that the bus driver ran a red light. According to school officials, 39-year-old Tracy Watkins has been driving with the district for one year and this is her first accident, but they had no comment on if the driver will face any disciplinary actions by the school district.
"Well of course that's an internal personnel matter of the school district. All drivers are under the Texas Commercial Driver's License under the State of Texas and the Texas Department of Public Safety," Redell says.
So far the bus driver has not been issued any citations. Sgt. Bruce Dawsey of the Sherman Police Department says in situations like this where there are no fatalities or serious injures and police were not present at the time the accident occurred, more often than not citations aren't issued, and it is up to the investigating officer on the scene whether or not a citation is issued.
